How Common is Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in both men and women in the United States with close to 227,000 new cases estimated for 2025. But that number is declining due to fewer people smoking cigarettes and advances in early detection and treatment.1

Two main types:2

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)

About 80-85% of lung cancers are NSCLC and the main subtypes include adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC)

About 10-15% of all lung cancers are SCLC. It tends to spread and grow faster than NSCLC but responds well to chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
